When you search “Fear” on Google, 2 very opposing groups of information come up. The first is lists and lists of phobias. The second is dealing with the fear of being a failure. Literally.
How can one topic combine the fear of spiders to the fear of being an absolute failure?
To me, there seems like a HUGE disconnect and truthfully, something we can avoid.
Now, let’s preface this by saying that the fear of danger is true and real and unavoidable. If you feel unsafe, that’s REAL.
But if you feel the limiting belief of future failure, this is something we can work on.
ACRONYMS OF FEAR
False
Evidence
Appearing
Real
Or
Forget
Everything
And
Run
More often than not, we’re experiencing the first one. False Evidence Appearing Real. An example of this would be dreaming up a beautiful life for you and your family but being so fearful that you can’t move forward to accomplish the steps needed to get there, so you give up trying. You tell yourself you can’t afford that lifestyle or that you won’t be able to climb your corporate ladder enough to get the salary you desire. You’re filling your brain with false evidence.
And we’re here to tell you, that’s #FAKENEWS.
FEAR VS. HOPE
If you think about it, fear and hope are both mindsets based on future events. You can be fearful that you won’t be able to accomplish the steps needed to take in order to create the lifestyle you want. OR you can be hopeful.
Now we’re not saying that hope is all you need to accomplish your biggest goals. But having hope, and even more than that, having FAITH and BELIEF that you can achieve your wildest dreams, puts you in a far better place than being fearful of something so beautiful.
FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN
Most times, the things we fear are the unknown. Now you’re thinking, well DUH. Hello, 2020.
We’re fearful of how COVID is going to be affecting school systems. We’re fearful of taking an interview with a company that can better our lives. We’re fearful of asking for help or seeking mentorship because we assume it means we’re unintelligent or that we don’t know what we’re doing.
We’re afraid because we’re uncomfortable, because something is unfamiliar. And this is when I encourage you to choose FAITH. It doesn’t have to be spiritual or God-like or based in religion. But FAITH IN YOU.
It’s these instances when there’s a gap in what we can control and the future outcome.
MIND THE GAP
Okay I have a silly little example but stick with me on this one.
You know that little gap between the platform and the train when you’re about to board? There’s a thick yellow line that says, MIND THE GAP.
So let’s say on the platform with you is all of the things you are certain of; they’re things you know, things you can control. So if you’re fearful of taking an interview for a job - the platform is things like, your current salary, your position in your company that you know how to perform well in, it’s your current schedule and routines, it’s the knowledge of what you’re currently contributing in your family and your friendships, etc.
Now, on the train, it’s a whole new life; a new schedule, a new salary, different friendships and relationships that you can choose to strengthen.
In between the platform and the train is a GAP. And true, you can be fearful that your shoe will slip and you’ll fall through the gap or you’ll drop your phone or that you’ll be stuck forever.
OR you can have faith that your body will carry you across the gap and safely into the train.
IS YOUR FEAR MASKING AS SOMETHING ELSE?
No, we’ll never have all the answers. We’ll never be totally in control. But re-examine where the fear is sitting with you. Sure, you can be fearful about an interview but is that fear masking as something else? Maybe it’s the fact that you haven’t gone through an interview process in a while or you’re not quite sure your resume is as good as it can be. But these are things we can improve on. We can choose to prepare with mock interviews or have a business coach review our resume. And then, just take that leap of faith knowing you’ve done everything you can on that platform of yours, you’ve done everything you can control to put you in the best possible position.
And truthfully, at the heart of it, when you feel FEAR, it’s only because you CARE. Because there’s something deep inside of you that desires more.
Something that says, yes, your dreams lie BEYOND your fears.
